When Kema Ward’s life is upended by cancer, loss, and the storm that takes her home, she finds herself at a crossroads.
Yet instead of rebuilding the life that she had, she follows a deeper pull, one that leads her to the lush, untamed landscape of Costa Rica.
Here, immersed in the wild, healing begins—not just as a process of repairing, but also of remembering. The jungle doesn’t smooth the edges or silence the ache. Instead, it offers wholeness, reminding her that decay gives way to rebirth, and that grief can be alchemized into purpose.

As Kema’s journey unfolds, so too does her calling: to serve as a death doula, helping others reclaim their final moments as sacred and self-directed. Rooted in ancestral wisdom, this work becomes a powerful act of resistance and release —challenging a system that so often pathologizes death and severs it from the living.
Visually rich and sonically immersive, KEMA blends vérité intimacy with ethereal cinematography, mirroring the film’s central tension between the raw and the transcendent. The jungle is rendered as a living, breathing character—mysterious, merciful, and ever-evolving.

Sara Morsi
DIRECTOR/PRODUCER
Sara, an environmental scientist and filmmaker, is passionate about harnessing documentary to inspire people to rethink and embrace their place in the natural world. Across diverse genres, Sara has leveraged her technical background and creative writing to craft emotionally resonant narratives. For her directorial debut, Sara is honored to share her dear friend Kema’s journey.
David Bouley
DIRECTOR/CINEMATOGRAPHER
With over 15 years of experience, David brings a deep understanding of visual storytelling to his work as a cinematographer. From narrative to nonfiction, he has worked in nearly every filmmaking department over his career, including directorial. David excels at transforming stories into powerful visual narratives that create an immersive, cinematic experience. His recent works have enjoyed success at festivals across the nation.
Jessica Mutascio
EDITOR
Jessica is an award-winning editor known for her distinctive approach and creative vision in filmmaking. Her talent has earned her many accolades, from screening at festivals such as Cannes and Sundance, to awards for “best editing” from festivals across the globe. With a background that spans commercials, music videos, and both short and long-form film, Jessica brings a refined edge to documentary storytelling, transforming raw footage into impact and evocative narratives.
Dylan Castora
SOUND DESIGNER/COMPOSER
Dylan is a Boston-based Sound Mixer and Designer with over a decade of experience as an audio engineer and entrepreneur. Before transitioning into film, he founded and operated his own recording studio which continues to inform his work as a filmmaker. Specializing in immersive technologies to enhance storytelling, he has contributed to numerous feature films, short films, and documentaries. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Dylan’s extensive technical expertise enables him to craft craft rich, emotionally resonant soundscapes that bring narratives to life.
